What Is a Feral Cat?
A feral cat is unsocialized and lives outdoors, either born in the wild or abandoned and reverted to wild behavior. They avoid humans and rarely, if ever, become indoor pets.
In contrast, a stray cat is a lost or abandoned pet that once knew human contact. With care, stray cats may readjust and become adoptable.
What Is TNR?
Trap‑Neuter‑Return (TNR) is a humane method to manage outdoor cat populations. The process includes:
- Trapping cats using safe, humane traps.
- Spaying/neutering and vaccinating against rabies.
- Returning cats to their original outdoor location.
- Ear-tipping (removing the tip of one ear) while under anesthesia to mark them as sterilized.
TNR helps stabilize cat populations, reduces nuisance behaviors (yowling, spraying, fighting), and improves cat health. It is supported by the Tri-City Animal Shelter and Friends of Tri‑City.
How can I help?
The Friends of Tri-City Animal Shelter offer a Trap Neuter Return (TNR) program, offering access to traps, no-cost sterilization, and educational materials for colony caretakers. Learn more about the program.
