Take the Better Block Survey

This fall, the City of Duncanville and Better Block will temporarily reimagine the South Main Street corridor at East Wheatland Road to explore safer streets, stronger connections, and more vibrant public spaces.

The demonstration will test ideas like traffic calming, safer pedestrian crossings, outdoor seating, public art, and community gathering spaces to better connect Downtown Duncanville, Armstrong Park, nearby neighborhoods, businesses, and civic destinations. Throughout the project, community feedback and data will help inform future investments and long-term improvements along the corridor.

Communications Assessment

The City of Duncanville has contracted with Cooksey Communications to conduct a communications assessment. Cooksey has undertaken a Comprehensive Strategic Communications Assessment, also known as an “audit,” for the City of Duncanville, which began in the summer of 2026. The Cooksey team will conduct interviews with internal and external stakeholders to gather perspectives on the Duncanville communications effort.

enchmarking will also be conducted with peer and aspirational cities inside Texas. Cooksey will evaluate the City’s various communications channels and make recommendations. The result will be a plan to increase community engagement through communications.

City of Duncanville Launches Smart Water Meter Project

The City of Duncanville will begin a water meter replacement project to install residential and commercial water meters with an automatic (smart) meter reading system. Water meters are used to measure the amount of water delivered to our customers. Replacing old water meters with new smart meters will ensure we can accurately track water usage while reducing maintenance work. Learn more

DUNCANVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Duncanville Police Department (PD) is proud to announce that Operation Ghost Town has been recognized with the 2025 United States Interdiction Coordinator (USIC) Domestic Investigation & Prosecution Award.

What began in July 2023 as an investigation by Duncanville PD’s two-man Narcotics Unit into fentanyl distribution throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area quickly grew far beyond the city limits.

As the investigation expanded, Duncanville investigators joined forces with a small group of Drug Enforcement Administration personnel investigating overlapping targets tied to fatal overdoses. Together, these investigators led Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) Operation Ghost Town, developing what became a complex, multi-state investigation targeting a large-scale fentanyl trafficking organization operating across Texas, Louisiana, and Arizona, with sources of supply extending into Mexico.

Despite its small core investigative team, the scope and impact of Operation Ghost Town were significant. Working alongside numerous local, state, and federal partners, investigators executed more than 100 legal processes, coordinated large-scale enforcement operations across multiple jurisdictions, and traveled to other states to lead intensive investigative and enforcement efforts.

Operation Ghost Town ultimately resulted in the seizure of nearly one million fentanyl tablets, kilogram quantities of additional narcotics, more than 50 firearms, and over $500,000. The investigation secured 30 federal indictments and dismantled a trafficking network determined to be responsible for distributing more than 25 million fentanyl tablets between 2023 and 2025.

Beyond the seizures and indictments, Operation Ghost Town disrupted major sources of fentanyl entering communities throughout the region while also impacting associated violent crime, illegal firearm possession, and interstate drug trafficking.

Last week, Operation Ghost Town was recognized at the White House in Washington, D.C., with the USIC Domestic Investigation & Prosecution Award, presented by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, which is part of the Executive Office of the President of the United States.

This national recognition is a testament to what can be accomplished by a small, dedicated investigative team supported by strong partnerships. The Duncanville Police Department is incredibly proud of the work of Sergeant Nathan Roach and Detective Gregory Seipert and grateful for their DEA counterparts and the many local, state, and federal agencies whose collaboration helped make Operation Ghost Town successful.

Officer Becerra and K9 Chico completed week 3 of training this week and both are progressing well.

Parks

• Crews continued preparations for upcoming games and events, including edging BBI Fields 1–5, sod removal, Lions Park game preparations, and layouts for new football fields.
  
• Staff coordinated and assisted with the installation of 8 new trees and contractor-installed playground mulch. Staff also mulched, fertilized, and watered the newly planted trees.
  
• Crews addressed low-hanging limbs at the Fieldhouse, Armstrong Park, James Collins Boulevard, and near the Senior Center to improve visibility and clear signs, sidewalks, and walkways.
  
• Staff prepared athletic facilities for 6 upcoming events and completed 3 game preparations at Lions Park. Overall field conditions were rated 4 out of 5.
  
• Crews completed equipment and operational maintenance, including replacing edger blades, repairing the Sand Pro pedal, cleaning, organizing, and restocking the paint shed.
  
• Crews completed layouts for new football fields and continued cleanup of baseball fields for upcoming events. Reported downed trees behind Lions Park; removal is pending due to the brush truck being out of service.
  
• Crews mowed and completed cleanup operations throughout Harrington Park.
  
• Crews trimmed and removed low-hanging branches at the Fieldhouse and Armstrong Park that were obstructing signs, sidewalks, walkways, and other areas.
  
• Crews continued limb cleanup along James Collins Boulevard, near the Senior Center, and along the back fence of Armstrong Park to improve visibility and accessibility.
  
• Crews completed landscape bed maintenance at Ferguson Circle, the QT raised bed, Harrington sign, and CVS raised bed, including weeding, shrub trimming, edging, crack maintenance, and general cleanup.
  
• Crews watered and applied liquid fertilizer to the newly installed trees and completed cleanup around Kidsville following contractor mulch installation.

Recreation Center

Program Highlight – Karate
The Duncanville Recreation Center offers a Karate Program, which meets every Monday and Wednesday from 4:30–5:45 p.m. The program is led by 5th Degree Black Belt Kris Howerton (GoDan) and 4th Degree Black Belt Cedrick Frank (YonDan). Participants learn valuable self-defense techniques, anti-bullying strategies, and proper martial arts skills while working toward belt advancement.

The program is available for ages 7 and up, with monthly fees of $40 for children and $50 for adults. Whether participants are new to martial arts or working toward their next belt, the Karate Program provides a fun environment to build confidence, discipline, and self-defense skills.

Program Highlight – Archery
One of Duncanville’s most unique programs at the Recreation Center is the Archery Program, offered every Tuesday from 6:30–7:30 p.m. The program is led by NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program) Certified Instructor Aidan Pennebaker.

The class provides everything needed to get started, including left- and right-handed bows. Not sure which bow is right for you? Coach Aidan is there to help. 

The class includes target practice, instruction on proper and safe shooting techniques, and fun mini games such as Tic-Tac-Toe, Four Corners, and Bullseye. The program is open to ages 12 and up for just $20 per month, making it a great opportunity to learn a unique skill, build confidence, and have fun.

Community Event Highlight – Boo Bash Vendor Registration Open
The spookiest time of the year is right around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than at Duncanville’s annual Boo Bash on October 23!
The Duncanville Parks and Recreation Department is inviting vendors of all types to join us for this exciting community event and promote their organization, business, or services. With 1,000+ attendees expected, Boo Bash is a great opportunity to connect with the Duncanville community and showcase what you have to offer.

Armstrong Park

Staff continue to finalize event logistics, entertainment, programming, and operational needs as the event approaches.

The event’s new branding has been implemented across marketing materials, and staff are continuing to promote the festival through social media, digital content, and community outreach. Video content is also being developed to increase engagement and build excitement leading up to the event.

Programming will include EZ Band, Mariachi Las Alteñas, cultural entertainment, dancing horses, a car show, food and marketplace vendors, and additional family-friendly activities. Staff are coordinating final details with participating groups and vendors, as well as VIP hospitality and event-day operations.

Staff have met with the City’s Emergency Management team to review the event layout, safety considerations, traffic flow, and operational needs. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for August 24 to continue final preparations and coordination between departments.

With the event less than a month away, the Special Events team is transitioning into final production, focusing on site logistics, staffing, vendor coordination, marketing, and day-of-event readiness.

PLANNING AND ZONING

• The Planning and Zoning department are preparing land use chart amendments.

PUBLIC WORKS

Street Division 

• Crews removed and cleared large tree branches obstructing vehicular traffic on Creekhaven Drive and North Forest Lane.
  
• Crews identified and located five utility storm drain inlets at various locations throughout the city in support of upcoming maintenance operations.
  
• Crews completed sidewalk construction and executed an Americans with Disabilities-compliant ramp concrete pour on South Alexander Avenue.
  
• Crews completed street and sidewalk concrete pours on Memory Lane.
  
• Crews deployed cones and barricades on Hastings Street to ensure proper traffic control and work zone safety.
  
• Crews assisted library staff with internal facility maintenance tasks, including bookshelf cleaning.
  
• Crews supported the crack sealing team by installing “No Parking” signage at designated street locations.
  
• Crews completed two utility related asphalt street repairs on Memory Lane and West Camp Wisdom Road.
